A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
I took my time, but after hearing so much about Sarah J. Maas's world, I had to find out for myself. I started with A Court of Thorns and Roses.
The story is about a girl named Feyre, who lives in an old house with her two sisters and dad. After their mom died and their dad got injured, they got pretty poor. Feyre has to go into the woods to hunt. Feyre is hunting a deer when a giant wolf arrives. To save the meat of the deer, she kills the wolf. The wolf happens to be a Faerie, and another Faerie comes to her home to demand payment for the death. Dead or to live in the realm of Prythian. Feyre chooses to go with the Faerie.
"There and those who seek me a lifetime, but never we meet, and those I kiss, but who trample me beneath ungrateful feet. At times I seem to favor the clever and the fair, but I bless all those who are brave enough to dare. By large, my ministrations are soft-handed and sweet, but scorned I become a difficult beast to defeat. For though each of my strikes lands a powerful blow, when I kill I do it slow..."
- Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses
In Prythian, Feyre learns about the Fearies and the curse. For the rest of the story, we follow Feyre on her way to love and her attempts to stop the curse.
"I threw myself into that fire, threw myself into him, and let myself burn."
- Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses
The first few chapters were a bit dull, but I became more attached to the characters as I read more of the story. I liked that the story wasn't too predictable. If this book had been written from Tamlin or Luciens's POV, it would have been a 5-star book for me. I was more invested in their story and history than in Feyre. She isn't really my kind of character. I found her a bit stupid in handling some situations.
I listened to the book on Storytel. I picked the Dramatized Adaptation. Hearing the footsteps and the background noises made the story feel much more alive.
I will be continuing this series. I hope to read more about Lucien and Tamlin and how they became who they are, and I want to read about Rhysand.
At the end of the book, I gave it 3,5 stars.
