Dune by Frank Herbert

A few weeks back, my boyfriend and I went to the second Dune movie in the cinema. It was a fantastic movie, but there were still some things that needed to be clarified for me or that I wanted to know more about. And what better way to find all these answers than to read the original story: the book 'Dune' by Frank Herbert.

For those who have not seen the movies or read the book, the story is about a boy named Paul Atreides. He lives in Caladan with his dad, Leto, the Duke, and his mom, Jessica. They have taken the planet Arrakis from the Harkonnen. They move to live on Arrakis because of the spice that can be harvested in the desert of Arrakis. The spice is precious.

"The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience."

- Frank Herbert, Dune

Things do not go completely to plan, and Paul and his mom end up in the desert and have to survive. This dessert is even worse than the one we have here on earth, and without special suits, they will not survive for even one day.

Meanwhile, the Harkonnen are doing everything they can to end the Atreides family.

"A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process, must join it and flow with it."

- Frank Herbert, Dune

Dune is a Science Fiction novel with the most detailed world-building with romance, betrail and politics woven throughout the story.

I found the book a bit hard to get into. It started with laying the foundations of the world and politics with incredible detail. This was hard for me to get into because I am used to reading fast-paced books in which you fall from one event into another. In this book, this wasn't the case. Another thing that I found hard for me was that there weren't any chapters. I learned that it is okay to end a reading session in the middle of a page when that is the place where the scene changes.

The further I got into the story, the weirder it got. Slowly, more was happening in the story, but it skipped parts, which made it very hard to follow.

There are eight books in total, but I don't think I will continue this series. At the end of the book, I still wasn't really invested in the characters. I didn't really care if they made it or not.

At the end of the book, I gave it 2,5 stars.
