Day One: Cambridge
It was an early start for us. With the alarm at 4 o’clock and a quick breakfast in our belly, we went on our way. It’s a strange feeling to have driven four hours in complete darkness and to arrive in Belgium before dawn.
We kind of overshot our driving time to get to Calais and the ferry, but we were lucky because of it. We were allowed on the ferry that departed an hour earlier. It took a little while to get through customs, but we got through without any problems. After a few minutes on the sea, we got our sea legs back and went inside to get warm.
At around 12 p.m., we arrived at Dover. We still had a bit of a drive left, but this drive was a bit different. We had to drive on the left side of the road, and this is quite a challenge to wrap your head around if you always drive on the right side. We got to Cambridge safely and checked into the hotel before going into the city to explore.
It was already getting dark when we arrived at the inner city, but with the Christmas lights, it still looked quite nice to walk through. After driving and walking for quite a while we went back to the hotel to eat dinner as we were getting hungry. In the evening we took up the British tradition of drinking a cup of tea.
