Girl in Pieces By Kathleen Glasgow

While walking around our local bookshop, I saw multiple books by this author. When I picked this one off the shelf and read the synopses on the back, I found it looked interesting. I haven’t seen a book about this topic before, as it’s quite a taboo topic, but I feel like there shouldn’t be such a stigma on it, as many young people struggle with these things.

Girl in Pieces is a book about Charlotte Davis. Charlotte is a seventeen-year-old girl who we meet while she’s in a mental hospital. Before this, she was living on the street with nothing more than a few friends, and the most terrible things were done to her. She found her peace in broken glass but ended up in the mental hospital when things were taking a turn for the worse.

“I remember the stars that night. They were like salt against the sky, like someone spilled the shaker against very dark cloth. That mattered to me, their accidental beauty.”

This book kept me reading till the very end. There isn’t much happening plot-wise, but Charlotte is going through such a change as she tries to get herself back together, even when things are not going as smoothly as she hooped. I hope more people read this book as it shows that even if you are at the worst and things look bad, it’s essential to keep going and remember that good things await you. It’s a book about hurt, wrongdoing and not-so-great coping mechanisms, but it’s also a book about love, healing and the purpose of not giving up.

“I wish you'd stayed longer. I had so much to tell you. I just know you would have understood.”

Girl in Pieces is a book I will remember for a while. It made me feel a lot and made me think even more. The writing style wasn’t perfect all the time, but the story is worth reading. Considering this, it was a 4-star read.
