The Timekeepers by Jill Archie
On my way to England, I finished another review request I received. I really like doing these review requests as it pushes me to read other books than I would normally pick out myself and I am hoping to find some new favorites this way.
The Timekeepers is a story about Onyx. Onyx's father is the Immortal Timekeeper and they keep watch over the Clockwork world that consists of five clock gears that power eternal time. Every day she maintains the gears of the world and the gears of her heart, but after the arrival of a student, the opportunity arrives to explore the clock world herself and leave her sheltered life behind. But this changes more than only the scenery.
“Aside from the inventions though, in this part of the city, the cheapest way to travel was in carriages pulled by giant ostriches, who waited on the street corners stomping their two clawed toes on the metal cobblestones, alertly searching for their next passenger with big, billiard-like eyeballs.”
Jill Archie, The Timekeepers
I had a bit of difficulty to get into the book. I couldn’t connect with the characters. The storyline I did like a lot is happening which makes it fun to read although I didn’t find the book very original. Most of the problems the main character faced were predictable and the way she dealt with them was even more predictable. This doesn’t make this book a bad one, but for someone who reads a lot of books, it isn’t as enjoyable. The world could have been more explored in my opinion.
“Laying on his back, with eyes half-closed, Edison pointed to the gears at the base of the lever. “I threw it … in the gears …” he said between breaths.”

Someone who picks up this book is probably doing this because they like the aesthetic of the world on clock gears, but this book could have played off anywhere as the clockwork didn’t bring a lot to the table. What I loved about this book were the illustrations these were a beautiful addition to the book.
I am sadly going to give this book 2 stars.
