Day Four: Staxigoe

We started this morning with a drive to the lighthouse. We had to do this first thing as it was the first thing we woke up to this morning. The light was shining right into the bedroom window, but we couldn’t get closer as the road towards the lighthouse was a private road that was closed off.

After watching the lighthouse the weather was still really bad so we decided to go for a drive around. We were driving alongside the coast when we came by this beautiful place, with a perfect few and when we got out of the car it even stopped raining. This beautiful place is called Castle Hill located in the town of Castletown. Here they extracted a large amount of flagstones.

The ruins of the houses are still there, but nowadays the flagstones won’t be taken out of the ground anymore, even though it was a perfect material to build with and most of the buildings in the town are build with it.

After a nice lunch back at our cottage we went to explore the ruin close by the lighthouse. After having driven past it in the morning because it was pouring down we wanted to come back to it. We parked the car and put on our walking boots and went on our way through the puddles. Our trouwsers are now a little less clean as when we got out of the car.

We thought we would be able to walk through the ruins but the bridge was locked as it was getting too dangerous inside the ruins. this castle must have been quite the side back then. High on a cliff and right on the edge of the cliff. It’s a wonder there is still so much left. I would have thought that more of the cliffside would have gone lost in the sea. The Castle Sinclair Girnigoe has been standing on the edge since 1476. With the North Sea protecting the castle on three sides it was quite the hideout.
